ASSISTANCE IN APPLYING FOR VETERAN BURIAL BENEFITS

We can help you notify the Veterans Administration and the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of the death of your family member.  We can make arrangements for burial, cremation, and any required outer burial container required by the cemetery of your choice or the local Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.

Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado
Located at 2830 D Road, Grand Junction, Colorado - 970-263-8986.

We have forms available to arrange for the grave marker (headstone) and obtain a flag for the family.  Also, we will be glad to file an application for burial benefits for the veteran and/or eligible dependents, providing requirements for submission of the application can be met.  The some or all of the following documents are required for the application process:

  • DD214 (proof of service, ie - enlisted record of separation, discharge documents, or retirement orders).

  • Certified (original) copy of death certificate

  • Certified copy of marriage certificate

  • Copies of paid funeral expenses and cemetery receipts

  • Copies of paid hospital and doctor bills, if applicable

  • Verification of amount of life insurance you will receive

  • Social Security number of veteran's spouse or dependents, if applicable

For veterans who are receiving compensation for a service-connected disability, the VA will pay up to $300 toward burial or cremation expenses and $150 toward a plot in a private cemetery.  If the death happened while in a VA hospital, or under contracted nursing home care, some of the costs for transporting the deceased's remains may be reimbursed.

PRESIDENTIAL CERTIFICATE

An engraved paper certificate with the veteran's name, signed by the current President is issued to the next-of-kin to express the nation's recognition of the veteran's service, and to honor the memory of honorably discharged deceased veterans.
